Selling and Finding Products Online
Many entrepreneurs are starting new businesses, as well as expanding existing brick and mortar type businesses, and are choosing to sell products online via eBay, personal websites, online classifieds and sites like craigslist, local sales pages and more. The possibilities are many provided you have a product and understand your market.
For existing businesses this can be a smooth transition, they have already experienced success in their brick and mortar store or flea market business, or any other type of direct selling, and are looking to improve sales online. They have products and understand their market.
You can choose a direct sales type company like Avon or Mary Kay, (there are many to choose from), there you will be provided with a proven market plan and products, or you can choose to start your own company and go it alone. By choosing this route you will find yourself faced with the task of finding what are the best online moneymakers and where to find the right products to sell online and ways to sell them that work.
A great place to start would be to sell products that you are familiar with. Perhaps the best may be products you already work with or products related to a hobby or favorite past time you enjoy. Chances are good that there are a lot of people who share your passion and would be looking for related products. It doesn’t even have to be a physical product; downloadable information in the form of e-books and videos can do very well.
It would be very rare that you come up with a product that no one else has and that may mean you might be just another average Joe selling a widget that everybody else is, so it is important to do your research to make sure your product has a strong market and that you have a good marketing strategy.
Another great place to find your product or product niche would be through family or friends and perhaps even strangers. You might hear them talk of a common need or lack of a good product to solve a need and after a little research on your part you may find the perfect product to solve their needs. Chances are if they are looking, others are too so there may indeed be a market there. Keep your eyes and ears open everywhere.
Don’t forget to research newspapers and magazines and even junk mail for that matter. Finally a good use for junk mail! These sources can provide loads of information on trends, hot styles and new ideas. Just browse through and make a list and in no time you’ll have plenty of great ideas to research and work with.
Find out what other sellers are selling. eBay has a great resource in the Seller Central area called “What’s Hot”. Every month they post a list of super hot, very hot and hot items that are enjoying great sales. Don’t forget to think seasonally, snow shovels don’t sell well in springtime and lawnmowers don’t sell well in the winter, so it is probably very good advice to have multiple products and to be aware of the calendar cycle to optimize your sales.
Probably your best source for top selling online products will come from your buyers. It is a great idea to collect feedback from them as to what other areas of interest they have and what recent purchases they have made. It’s amazing what people will tell you if you only ask.
Finding online products to sell may seem like a tall order to fill, but with just a little effort in the right areas, the ideas will find you and just keep on coming one right after the other.
The actual product, if you don’t have one or a source for one, can be found by doing an internet search for wholesalers and wholesale product distributers. It is important the supplier you choose can support the type of business you plan to engage in. Some specialties include drop shipping, so you have no need to stock items, discontinued and overstock items are great for Flea Markets(you’ll need to pre-sell or plan on stocking these items), and specialty manufacturers and suppliers for those one of a kind items.
The opportunities are almost endless, so my best advice to you is to choose a niche that you are passionate about, jump in, have fun and enjoy your work and before long you may find yourself with a top selling online product.
